Students of Sylhet Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Shabiprobi), which has been declared closed indefinitely, are protesting this time demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. At the same time, they demanded justice for the students who were injured in the attack.
Shabiprabi was closed indefinitely on Sunday (January 16) until further notice during the day-long student movement. Until this report is written, the students have been protesting on the campus till 12 midnight on Sunday demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor.
The agitating students say that the vice-chancellor is responsible for the situation created in Shabiprabi. They are calling the attack on about 50 students injured. Due to all these, they are demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. However, the agitating students have not yet made any decision about the next program.
Earlier, an emergency syndicate meeting on Sunday evening decided to close Shabiprabi indefinitely, said Vice-Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed. Meanwhile, the university administration ordered the students to leave the hall by 12 noon on Monday (January 17). However, the official activities of the university will remain active.
Complaints of students, students of the statistics department, Takiya, student of the physics department, Mashed Hasan, Ankita, students of other departments Sajal Kund, Gulzar Rahman, Abu Saleh Md. Nasim, Bushra, Choya, Majedul Islam Season, Professor Dr. Treasurer among teachers. Anwarul Islam, Director of Student Advice and Guidance Prof. More than half a hundred students including Zahir Uddin Ahmed were injured. Several policemen were also injured in the incident.
A delegation from the university administration met with the dean of the university, the head of the department, the director of student counseling and instruction, the hall provost and other administrative officials to normalize the heated situation on campus this afternoon. Later, when the protesters did not accept their demands, at one stage, the students followed the delegation, saying, "Administration is contempt, the administration is contempt."
Witnesses said the administration, including the president of the teachers' association, the proctor, the director of student advice and guidance, assured the students to improve the quality of the hall and take appropriate action against mismanagement. Therefore, the administration wants one week for the students. But the protesters refused to extend the time as the demands of the students were not met. After the members of the administrative team left, on the way, the students chased after the administration. Arjun went upstairs to chant the slogan.
At one point, after the students chased the administrative body, Arjun came to the Vice-Chancellor's office from the floor. At that time, the agitators found Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed in front. He then surrounded the Vice-Chancellor, followed him, and marched towards the IICT building, chanting slogans such as 'Dhikkar Dhikkar' and 'Administration Dhikkar'.Teachers and officials present at the university with the vice-chancellor. After a three-hour siege, the Vice-Chancellor was released from the IICT building and taken to his residence by the police.
Earlier in the day, the agitating students had blocked the road since morning accusing the BCL of attacking the ongoing student movement demanding three points including the resignation of the provost committee. No vehicles were allowed on the campus at that time. Later, at around 3 pm, the Dean of different faculties of the university, Proctor Dr. Alamgir Kabir, Director of Student Advice and Guidance, Professor Zahir Uddin Ahmed, Teachers Association President Prof. Tulsi Kumar Das, and General Secretary Prof. Mahibul Alam.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Azbahar Ali Sheikh, who was present at the spot, told media persons that the police did not attack the students. University teachers went to the spot to explain to the agitating students. At this time the students attacked them. The police took position behind them. Several members of the police, including him, were injured when students hurled brickbats at him. As a result, the police fired sound grenades to disperse the protesting students. Police are currently on campus and the situation is under control.
