A court in the United States has sentenced three whites to life in prison in the Ahmed Arberry murder case.
Travis McMahon and his father, Gregory McMahon, were sentenced to life in prison without parole on Friday for murder. And the court sentenced neighbor William Roddy Bryan to life in prison after 30 years of parole. Earlier, in November last year, Travis, Gregory, and Brian were convicted of torture, murder, and involvement in various criminal activities. Ahmed Arberry, 25, was shot dead by Travis and his father on a road a few minutes away from their home in Brunswick, Georgia on February 23, 2020. Ahmed Arberry went out to jog at this time. William Bryan videotaped the incident. It later spread online. The case was started last November against the three accused.
Announcing the verdict, Georgia Superior Court Judge Timothy Walsley said: "This is a different kind of heartbreaking incident. Young Ahmed Arberry was killed after he ran out of the house to run. The accused took the law into their own hands. '
Before the verdict was announced, Ahmed Arberry's mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, told reporters, "This is not a mistake but a premeditated murder. Defendants did not want to see my son in their society because of caste differences. That is why they deserve severe punishment. '
The video of the assassination of the black Ahmed Arberry sparked a heated debate in the United States at the time, which turned violent in May. George Floyd, 46, was shot dead by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The whole United States protested against the killing. Across the country, anti-apartheid protests spread across the country. In June last year, Derek Chauvin, a white U.S. police officer, was charged with felony homicide. He was later sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison.
