For the first time, a man has been sentenced to nine years in prison under the National Security Act
For the first time in Hong Kong, the High Court has sentenced a man to nine years in prison under the National Security Act.
Tong Ying Kit, a Hong Kong national, has been charged with involvement in terrorism and separatism. Judges say the state's allegations against Tong Ying Kit have been substantiated. The convicted 24-year-old man is a writer by profession.
Police said Tong drove a motorcycle over police during anti-government protests last year demanding democracy. Police also claimed that he had a flag of Hong Kong's independence in his hand at the time. His lawyer said he would appeal against the verdict.
Meanwhile, human rights groups have protested against the ruling. They say the new law undermines freedom of expression.
