It struck Hachijojima Island, 103 kilometers northeast of the mainland, on Sunday morning local time. The epicenter was reported at a depth of 50 km.

No tsunami alert was issued. One week ago, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook the northeastern part of the country.
