The department said 31-year-old Ima Coronal Aizapuro was charged with conspiracy to smuggle cocaine, heroin and marijuana into the United States. He was arrested at Dallas International Airport.
Guzman is the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico's most notorious drug trafficking groups.
He handled hundreds of tons of narcotics in the United States and had a hand in killing people who passed by him, the court statement said.
He was extradited to the United States in 2016 to stand trial and was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
The sentence was announced two years after the drug lord was handed over to US authorities. Ima is entitled to dual citizenship. He is a citizen of Mexico as well as the United States. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
