The United Nations has demanded the release of at least 45 leaders and activists detained illegally, including Aung San Suu Kyi. An emergency session of the Security Council is scheduled to convene today.

Earlier, in the last decade, the United States lifted sanctions on Myanmar after the start of the democratic process. Myanmar's military overthrew a democratically elected government in a military coup on Monday.

24 ministers and deputy ministers were removed from their posts. So far, Army Chief Min Aung Laing has appointed members of the army to 11 posts, including finance, health, home affairs, and foreign affairs.
