Myanmar is a South Asian country known worldwide for its stunning natural beauty. The country has vast beaches on one side of the horizon, dense jungles, and high mountains on the other.
The Buddhist-majority country is also famous for all the ancient pagodas around the world. Besides, there are eye-catching lakes in the country. Myanmar's rainforest is said to be one of the richest forests in the world. As a result, Myanmar has risen to the top of the list of top destinations for travelers.
However, even in the seventy-third year of independence, the country could not be free from military shackles. Democracy lasted only a few years, holding the hand of Suu Kyi, the daughter of General Aung San, one of the leaders of the freedom struggle, but it did not last. The military junta seized power again on Monday, alleging rigging and fraud in the election.
Decades of lasting military rule have also affected Myanmar's tourism industry. Despite its reputation for being one of the most attractive destinations in the world, it has not been able to attract tourists due to military restrictions.
In the meantime, from the beginning of last year, like other countries, the tourism business has come to a standstill. According to the country's tourism business association, more than 5.5 million out of a total of 8 lakh workers in the sector were laid off during the epidemic. According to government officials, the number of tourist arrivals in Myanmar has decreased by 75 percent in 2019.
Although Corona's restrictions were eased last December, it did not boost the tourism sector much. In this situation, the question remains as to how much the situation arising out of the recent military coup will help in the development of the tourism industry.
