
Citizens of the country have been shutting down the Facebook pages of all local and international media since Thursday (February 18th) morning. However, Facebook has claimed that it was an unintentional mistake.
Australians are also unable to access the pages of various government and non-government organizations in the country. The news of the Australian media is not going to be read in other countries either. The government says the move jeopardizes the company's credibility. On Wednesday (February 17), a proposal was passed in the lower house of the Australian Parliament to make it mandatory for tech companies to publish news.
Google and Facebook are alleging unfair fines under the new law. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp agreed to pay Google for the news, but Facebook took the opposite step.
