Alexei Navalny, Russia's main opposition leader, has been sentenced to 30 days in prison. On Monday, a court in the country ordered him jailed. Al Jazeera reported.
Navalny and his wife landed at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport just after 8 pm local time on Sunday, five months after falling ill with poisoning. The leader, known as a fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin, was arrested shortly after his descent. However, their flight was scheduled to land at Nukovo Airport.
Shortly before the Navalny plane landed at the designated airport, the pilot announced the landing at another port. He mentioned 'mechanical reasons' behind this. Several journalists were also on board the plane carrying Navalny.
"I know I'm fine, I'm not afraid of anything," Navalny told supporters gathered at the airport. Shortly afterward, Russian police arrested him.
Navalny, 44, fell ill after drinking a cup of tea in August last year while returning to Moscow from Serbia on a domestic flight. He was later admitted to a local hospital. If his condition did not change, he was taken to Germany for advanced treatment. Allegedly, an attempt was made to kill him with a toxic nerve agent. Navalny has accused the Russian government of trying to assassinate him. However, the Kremlin has denied the allegations.
