Oxford University-India has decided to impose a ban on the Serum Institute, a manufacturing company that exports AstraZeneca vaccines. The ban is expected to continue for several months.
Due to India's ban, it may take months for vaccines to reach ordinary people in poor countries.
In an interview with the Associated Press (AP), Adar Punawala, chief executive of the Seram Institute, said that on Sunday, India's regulatory body gave urgent approval to their vaccines. However, the condition is that the Seram Institute vaccine cannot be exported to ensure the safety of the common people of India. We can only provide vaccines to the Government of India at the moment. It has also been instructed not to stockpile vaccines.
Punawala added that Serem has also been asked to refrain from selling vaccines in India's inland market.
Earlier in the day, the Seram Institute told a meeting that it wanted to focus on producing the amount of vaccines that India urgently needs two months before giving them to countries that are interested in vaccinating them.
On Sunday, India's Drug Controller General (DCGI) announced emergency approval. This opens the door to vaccination against coronavirus in the second most affected country.
More than one crore people have been infected with corona in India so far; Which is the second highest in the world. And about one and a half lakh died. At the outset of the distribution plan, India set a target of vaccinating 300 million people. Priority will be given to the front line corona fighters including doctors and health workers.
The company also agreed to give the Oxford vaccine made in India to Bangladesh. Due to which Bangladesh was very close to getting vaccinated. The country's health minister also expressed hope that the vaccine would be available by January.
Serum also planned to give 200 million to 300 million doses of Covax vaccine to Bangladesh by December 2021.
Bangladesh signed an agreement with Serum Institute and Beximco Pharmaceuticals on November 5 to get 30 million doses of Oxford-made Covidshield Ticker. For the first six months, Beximco planned to administer 5 million doses of the vaccine every month.
