Two policemen have been killed in militant firing in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Three more people were injured in the incident.
The casualties came on Friday (August 14th) when a patrol team was attacked in Naogaon near the capital's Srinagar.
Police said there were random shootings between the two sides in the Naogam area of Srinagar. Two people died on the spot. Another seriously injured policeman is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Security forces are conducting operations in the surrounding area to catch the militants.
Indian police are searching for the gunmen. They claim the attackers are members of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad militant group.
Security has been tightened across the country on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15. Surveillance has also been stepped up in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the militants carried out the attack in the meantime.
